European champions Paris Saint-Germain have created a sound impact, beating Atletico Madrid in their opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States last weekend.
Diego Simeone’s side are known for their defensive ability. Hence, a 4-0 defeat is huge for them and a great boost for PSG because this is the first FIFA CWC that has 32 teams from different parts of the world taking part.
Not to forget that the 2024-25 UCL title is PSG’s only European top-flight glory. Unlike 2024 and before, now the Club World Cup will only take place once every four years. This makes the significance of the tournament better.
Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha scored one goal each in the first half and put PSG 2-0 ahead. Making things treble, Clement Lenglet earned the red card in the 78th minute. PSG then added two late goals, thanks to Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in (scoring one goal each).
Atletico Madrid have now lost their opening game in Group B at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Now it is crucial for them to win the next and final two games to open the round of 16 doors, as the top two teams from each group of four sides will make it to the knockout stages.
