Xabi Alonso has made a major decision: He will end his journey as the Bayer Leverkusen manager after the two remaining games of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season.
It means that the 2010 World Cup winner is joining Real Madrid as the manager this summer.
After Real’s Champions Legaue quarter-final exit last month, strong rumours were coming that the 15-time European champions are looking at their former player Xabi Alonso to replace Carlo Ancelotti.
Last season, Alonso created history by helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga and German Cup. For the first time in Leverkusen’s history, they won the German top-flight title.
As a result, it has made Alonso their greatest ever manager.
From 2019 to 2022, Real Sociedad B was the club Alonso managed.
He then made a move to the German club in 2022.
And in just two seasons, Alonso created history at Bayer Leverkusen.
Ahead of the game against Borussia Dortmund, Xavi said: “We can let you know that this week the club and I, we have agreed that these two games are going to be my last two games as a Bayern Leverkusen coach.”
This season, too, Alonso kept Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race. However, he lost the race to FC Bayern Munich last week.
As his beloved German side have booked the second spot in the domestic league table, they are going to play in the Champions Legaue next season.
