India head coach Gautam Gambhir backs the lower-order batsmen after India failed to win the opening match of the England tour by five wickets.
England chased the 371 target in the second innings well and earned a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Despite India’s batters scoring five centuries in both innings, Shubman Gill’s side were not able to win the match.
Shubman Gill’s 147, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s and Rishabh Pant’s 134 runs came in the first innings. Despite three players adding 100-plus each, India were able to score 471 at the cost of 10 wickets.
England then scored 465 runs in response. In the second innings too, Pant scored 118 runs and KL Rahul blasted 137 runs.
Having two good contributions with the bat, the lower order of India failed again and they were able to add 364 runs.
Unlike India, England did not lose all of their wickets in the second innings and won the game comfortably with Ben Duckett scoring a match-winning 149 runs.
Gambhir said: “I know it’s disappointing. And more importantly, I think they were more disappointed than anyone, because they knew we had the opportunity. It’s not like they’re not working hard in the nets. These things happen. Even proper batters fail. Hopefully they’ll learn, and hopefully we’ll get better performances from our tail. And that is not the only reason we lost the Test match.”
50 to 100 runs more in the second innings would have India draw or win the game. However, it is still a decent test match overall from batting point of view.
