Former India cricketer Ravi Shastri reacted to Steve Smith’s ODI retirement, following Australia’s exit from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy on Tuesday.

Australia lost the semi-finals against India by 4 wickets at the Dubai International Stadium.

For the tournament, Smith was named the captain of  Australia as their leader Pat Cummins did not play in the mega ICC event because of an injury.

The 35-year-old batsman scored 73 runs in 96 deliveries against India in the semis. However, not adding those 30 to 40 runs more possibly remained the reason behind India chasing the total with ease.

Following Steve Smith’s retirement, Ravi Shastri said on DP World Dressing Room show: “No real surprises, he (Steve Smith) was not getting younger by the day.”

Shastri also pointed out that he was not looking sharp in the game against India as he was beofre, so it was the right decision by Smith to retire from ODI cricket.

Smith is a two-time ODI World Cup winner with Australia in 2015 and 2023. He did play 116 ODIs for Australia, scoring 5,800 runs in 170 innings which includes 12 hundreds and 35 half-centuries.
