Balague Feels Time To Change Ancelotti at Real

Guillem Balague, a well-known expert on Spanish football, sees a new manager leading Real Madrid after this season.

On Wednesday, Real Madrid lost the second leg 2-1 against Arsenal at home and got knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-final stage.

Having lost the opening leg 3-0 in North London last week, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were not able to create magic in front of the home fans.

Bukayo Saka, after missing a penalty in the first-half, scored early in the second-half to extend the aggregate 4-0.

Vinicius Junior did try to make Real comeback with a 67th-minute goal. But they were not able to add any more goals. However, Ancelotti’s team did concede the goal late in the game.

Gabriel Martinelli added a 90+4-minute goal and made the away side reach the semis, where the Gunners will lock horns against Paris Saint-Germain later this month (first-leg, 29 April).

Balague feels that after the end of the 2024-25 season, Real would sack Ancelotti and bring a new face.

Balague said: “Real Madrid stand at the crossroads. They have a squad in need of refreshing.

“The defeat to Arsenal hasn’t caused a reset, it has simply confirmed the need for it. For Ancelotti the message will be clear – it’s time to move on.”
