The Chennai Super Kings have handed a massive advantage to the Mumbai Indians, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Punjab Kings for finishing inside the first two spots in the Indian Premier Legaue table and a better chance to reach the final.
The five-time IPL winners beat the Gujarat Titans by a massive 83 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday (25 May).
It was the final match of CSK in the IPL 2025, as they were not able to make it to the playoffs. However, they finished the season on a better note.
But the defeat has put GT under pressure, who are leading the IPL table with 18 points in 14 matches, as RCB and PBKS have one game each left, with both sides holding 17 points.
It is a massive relief for Punjab, which lost to the Delhi Capitals by six wickets on Saturday. A way for Gujarat to finish inside the first top positions is to see either RCB or PBKS lose their final match before the playoffs.
But the victory will push Punjab and Bengaluru to drag GT to even the third spot. The recent shake-up has given the Mumbai Indians a chance to get one of the first top spots. Because their next against is against Punjab on Monday (26 May).
If Mumbai win the game, they will have 18 points. Plus, they have a better run rate than GT.
For GT, the best case is to see Punjab win against Mumbai, and Bengaluru losing the match to the Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.
The top two teams in the IPL get an advantage of having two chances to reach the final.
