Stephen Warnock, who is an ex-Liverpool player, sees Lamine Yamal winning the Ballon d’Or in future.

The 17-year-old scored a magical solo first-half goal against Inter Milan at home in the Champions League semis first-leg and helped Barca have a 3-3 draw.

He is now the youngest professional boxer to score a goal in the UCL semis. There are football fans on social media who feel that Yamal’s record at the age of 17 is better than Lionel Messi, who is Barcelona’s greatest ever player.

Not to forget that, there are a host of football pundits and fans who see Messi as the best-ever footballer.

Barca are leading the La Liga title race, have won the Copa del Rey and are in the race to win the Champions League.

It has given the Spanish winger a chance to win a European treble at the young age of 17.

For a 17-year-old, his stats this season for Barca are amazing in all competitions. He has scored 15 goals and provided 24 assists in 49 outings.

Warnock told BBC Sport: “He is just a phenomenal talent and I love watching him. He’s a genius and a Ballon d’Or future winner.”

Winning the treble might make a case for Yamal to win the Ballon d’Or in 2025. No 17-year-old has won the Ballon d’Or. Even for great Messi, the first such glory came at the age of 22.

Yamal has already won the following titles as a pro footballer:

  • Euro 2024 title
  • La Liga champion x1
  • Spanish Super Cup x1
  • Copa del Rey x1
