Xavi Alonso officially became the new manager of Real Madrid on Monday. The 43-year-old replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who managed his last game for Real last week and is now the head coach of Brazil.
Alonso, as a player, had worked as a player under Ancelotti. They together won the 2013-14 Champions Legaue title as a player-manager combination.
In his second spell at Real, Ancelotti did not leave without winning anything. Yes, the 2024-25 season was not productive. But the Italian made them win to Champions Legaue titles during his time in Madrid from 2021 to 2025.
Alonso acknowledged the contribution of his former boss.
He said: “Carlo was my coach, a great person and a huge influence. Without his mastery, I probably wouldn’t be here.”
“I take over and carry on his legacy with great honour and pride.”
Alonso will start his role from June 1, ahead of the massive FIFA Club World Cup. He has joined Real after creating history at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga title and the German Cup in the 2023-24 season.
