For the first time in the Indian Premier League’s history, the Chennai Super Kings have failed to make the play-offs for two consecutive seasons.
A defeat against the Punjab Kings has ensured that there is no way for the five-time IPL winners now to progress. Shreyas Iyer’s side won the toss and elected to bowl first.
CSK put a well-balanced total of 190, but they lost all their wickets in 19.2 overs. Sam Curran took the responsibility to make things better for the home side. The England international added 88 runs off 47 balls.
Dewald Brevis also displayed a decent touch, scoring 32 runs. But all the other CSK betters did not make things smooth. Yuzvendra Chahal showed his worth in the IPL again, clinching four wickets.
The 34-year-old leg-spinner became the core reason behind CSK not being able to play all 20 overs.
Despite not being an all-around batting performance, Punjab did get a good target of 191 runs.
In a crucial game for Punjab, Shreyas Iyer presented the captaincy skills and blasted an amazing 72 off 41 balls.
The Punjab captain got the stable support from Prabhasimran Singh, scoring a magnificent half-century (54 runs).
Both Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh made things smooth, adding 43 runs each and making sure that the away side gets the victory in 19.4 overs.
A four-wicket win has placed Punjab second on the IPL table, having earned 13 points in 10 games. For CSK, it was the eighth defeat in 10 games overall.
